"Our knitters are our mainstay, they are from every nook and cranny of the province and represent both young and old alike. Some knit purely because they love to knit, others because their household depends on the extra income. Together they carry on the tradition of hand knitting in Newfoundland."
NONIA or the Newfoundland Outport Nursing and Industrial Association was originally founded in 1920 to provide funds to hire medical care in the outports through the sale of hand knit garments. Today, the nursing initiative is no longer necessary but the spirit of self-sufficiency lives on in a non-profit organization that manages a retail operation in St. John's. Each of NONIA's hand knit sweaters, socks, hats and mitts are created by 175 women in busy homes and lively kitchens across the province. Many customers cannot believe that in this day and age of big box stores and global brands someone took the time and effort to pick up needles and wool to create their knitted garments. NONIA has strict quality controls and each item is carefully inspected for accuracy in knitting construction and pattern. NONIA's longevity is proof of their ability to produce consistent, customer-pleasing quality.
