"I grew up in Placentia Bay and I know the strength of that landscape has influenced me –you can see it in my forms and textures. I make a lot of very different work, everything from shoes and bowls to accent tables and other objects that resemble tree trunks. I enjoy stretching and contouring the edges so that they resemble kelp and seaweeds."
Many craftspeople that work in clay are happy to chase perfection at the potter's wheel. But perfect circles and straight lines has never "done it" for Florence Donaway. She is a dedicated hand builder who prefers working from versatile slabs of red or white clay, especially when combined with burnt umber and earthy glazes. Her ceramic shoes and dresses are known for their distinctive reds, oranges and blacks. Donaway contrasts the velvet like appearance of some underglazes with a glossy finish on added decorations for a rich effect. Undulating flower petals, curling tendrils, or the sharp arch and point of a high heel –these are some of the forms that characterize Florence Donaway's ceramics. They function as graceful bowls, tables and elegant decorative accents, lending character and visual interest to our homes.
