" When I envision a design for a sculptural piece I try to imagine its final visual existence. I will choose a wood species that will complement the design and topic of the piece, whether it's a rich and elegant feel that I am trying to achieve or a more natural or organic appearance. I employ multiple sculpturing and texturing practices such as the old world technique of hand carving and the contemporary use of rotary tools along with sandblasting and any other technique that will allow me to achieve the desired effect." John Goodyear
Wood artist John Goodyear specializes in one-of-a-kind sculptural wood forms. John's primary focus is to execute the necessary texturing and sculpting techniques required to achieve the desired elements of his design idea.
Three of John's works won in their respective categories at the 2011 NICHE Awards held in conjunction with Philadelphia Buyers Market of American Craft on Friday February 18, 2011. Considering each artist is only allowed to submit three pieces, this is the highest possible honour that can be achieved. John's sculptural wood art has also been shown at The Rooms and at the Craft Council of Newfoundland and Labrador Gallery in St. John's, Newfoundland.
